Bloggers United Strikes Back!
I read about the defamation lawsuit against Malaysian bloggers, Jeff Ooi and Ahirudin Attan. What can I say? Some say it was an assault to internet free expression, I’d say it is a reality, one cannot have a boundless freedom to anything here.
The plaintiff is a party in a media line who by right should have been the one that advocates press freedom (but wholly controlled by the government). Ooi has been blogging critically about the government since 2003, and won the Reporters Without Borders Blog Award for Asia shortly after. Ahirudin was the executive editor of the Malay Mail, a newspaper under the NSTP, who started “Rocky’s Bru” after leaving the news group in 2006.
This will sure have a great repercussion to Malaysian blogging circles, which have become an important outlet for alternative views. Reporters Without Borders, an international media watchdog lists Malaysia 92nd out of 168 nations on its worldwide press freedom index.
I read Bloggers United are cooking something up to strike back. Go Bloggers United!
